Light the Night AVL:
A Winter Solstice Lantern Walk
Hello! My name is Liberty Hanson Wild, and I’m an artist living just above the River Arts District in West Asheville. Although I’m relatively new to Asheville, my connection to RAD began when we moved here three years ago. It was clear from the start just how special this community is. As someone who deeply values creativity and connection, I was amazed by the abundance of RAD. When Hurricane Helene struck on September 27th, the devastation in RAD and the surrounding areas was heartbreaking. Witnessing the damage to a community that so many artists and creatives depend on for their livelihoods and sense of belonging filled me with sadness. I knew lifting spirits and bolstering this vibrant community would be more important than ever. While I may not be able to tackle the many immense challenges of rebuilding RAD, I wanted to use my creativity to do what lifts me—witnessing and celebrating the creativity of this incredible community. That’s how Light the Night AVL was born. Though this idea isn’t original, it comes from the heart, with its deepest meaning: bringing light, hope, and connection to the River Arts District when needed most.
'We Are Deeply Rooted II' mixed media, August 2024
'We Are Deeply Rooted II' features a photograph of a beautiful tree along the French Broad River in the River Arts District. Unfortunately, the tree in this image did not survive Hurricane Helene. When creating this piece, I felt like it reflected being rooted in self and Asheville. After Helene, I had the profound sense that it had a deeper meaning of being among a resilient and deeply rooted community.
